Thought I'd dust off this old thread and update it a bit.
2015 wasn't much of a season for me, I was injured and only got out for one day for deer hunting. Had a doe tag, and brought home a doe mule deer, one shot at a tad over 200 yds with the 25-06.
2016 I'd healed up and had my best big game season ever, maybe a present for my 60th birthday?
Elk, mule deer, antelope and black bear! Used the 30-06 and handloaded 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip for all of them. Only the mule deer needed a finishing shot, everything else was a one-shot deal.
This past fall, 2017, I tagged a 3x3 mule deer buck hunting on public land here in Washington, again just a bit over 200 yards with the 25-06. Great rifle for mule deer & antelope hunting!
Felt real good about that mule deer though, even if he was just a 3x3. I was 61 years old, hunting alone, on public land. I knew he was hiding in the brush, and that he'd likely show himself at last light, heading down out of the brush to feed and get water. I'd hiked much of the day, but sat down still for two hours at the end of the day and just faded into the landscape. Sure enough, I spotted him, took him, just a bit before last light. I skinned and quartered him on the spot, in the dark by my headlamp. Stuffed the meat into what became a very heavy backpack, and hiked out at night, for well over an hour to get back to my Jeep. Fresh meat heavy and warm against my back. Buck head & antlers in one hand, rifle in the other. Long slow hike back up and to the Jeep. Sure was satisfying to still be able to do it.
Hope some of you guys are getting out and hunting as well.
Regards, Guy

Have also been doing a fair bit of upland bird hunting the past few years. Some pheasant, but mostly chukar as there is an abundant population of them here on the bluffs above the Columbia River in central Washington. My dog is a German Wirehaired Pointer, 8 years old now. He and I love to get out, and my youngest son accompanies us when he can. Much as I like big-game hunting, I get an even bigger satisfaction from hunting upland game like quail, grouse, chukar & pheasants.
