Two completely different vehicles with different target audiences separated by 35 years and CAFE / NHTSA guidelines. If a car from 1980 were brought to market today, would anybody buy it? (At high volumes to make it profitable) So yes, original Cherokees are better offroad. New Cherokees are what today's buyers seek. Wrangler buyers are not the target audience of Cherokee shoppers.
