Default 4.88 help. limited slip + 4.88 package possible?

I have a 2012 jk wrangler sport 2dr 3.6 auto with 38s. I would like to re-gear to 4.88 however I heard I could swap the whole gears and different out and put a complete 4.88 with limited slip in all in one shot? Is this possible? Thanks

When you re-gear, they have to remove and replace the carrier. The ring gear attaches to the carrier. Then they have to "set up" the gears by shimming to get the pattern right.

Installing a locker or a limited slip (front or back) replaces the factory carrier. When you install a locker or limited slip, they have to remove the carrier, unbolt the ring gear from the carrier, bolt up the ring gear to your locker/limited-slip, re-install it in the housing, and set up the gears. Because of that, the labor to install a locker or limited slip is essentially free because they have to do this work anyway during the re-gear.

What limited slip are you looking at?

When I re-geared, I had them replace the busted factory limited slip in the rear with an Eaton TrueTrac. Would have put another TrueTrac in the front but ran out of money.

Good luck!

You dont have to replace the carrier unless you didnt originally upgrade your gears. Which most sport models dont...but it can all be done easier if you do it all at once.

Thanks for the info. I'm on the fence for 4.88 or go up in the 5 range. This is a DD

You can certainly go to a 5.13, but be aware that that substantially weakens your pinion. The gears are just too small on a D30.

I have the 3.8 with a 6 speed. Originally I had 3.73s and when I went up to 35s my jeep was even more of a dog. Couldn't comfortably sit in 6th gear on the highway. I went to 4.88s and added Truetrac LSDs and now its a lot better. I haven't gotten on it hard due to the break in period, but its nice. The LSDs are invisible on road and I can't wait to test them off road. Not everyone needs/wants lockers so this is a good alternative in my opinion. The install was done by skilled mechanics but from my perspective it seemed pretty straightforward. It replaced the carriers.

Hope this somewhat helps!
