Thumbs down Transmission-related limp mode?

My 2012 Wrangler Unlimited 2.8 CRD with 44 000 km on the clock has developed a sudden and what seems to be a fatal problem. With no warning signal, shifting between drive and reverse became very chunky, the check engine light lit up, and the vehicle went into limp mode and will not shift beyond 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] gear. When this occurred I switched the engine off to see if the system will reset. On first start-up afterwards the engine would not turn over, second try it started normally, but engine light remained on, it will not shift beyond 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and it remained in limp mode.

The vehicle It has been with the dealer for 2 weeks now and they have not been able to identify the problem. Any suggestions that I could pass on?
