2008 Red Rock JKU
07/08/2020
Life being what it is, I had to sell my 2013 JKUR 10A in june 2018 without having time to finish what I have planned. So after more less 2 years, I finally was able to buy a jeep again, but an older one with more kilometers, with some rust but it was what I could afford at the moment. With some time and work on the jeep, maybe it can turn better, I hope. So here it is, my new old and wear 2008 Unlimited Red Rock Crystal Sahara, automatic with 185 000km, no power/heated mirrors, no heated seats, no GPS but at least A/C, power doors/windows and remote door lock, a must with the kids. Both tops, chrome mopar sidestep. Oh I'm forgetting the nice tubular front & rear mopar bumpers, all rusted and repainted with a non-functional painted winch and some nice old school Hella comet ligths.
So at the pre-buy inspection, my mechanic told me for some reasons that he saw inspecting the jeep to negociate some grands from the asking price due to the obvious not that good condition of the jeep, mainly due in general to the not that good maintenance from the maybe both owners before me. Things that the around 70years old man finally agree after reflexion.
My finger is passing thru the under panel since it's kind of rusted rotten. Still don't know how I will fix this one..
Looks like the first owner had installed cb antenna on the top. Will it be a better choice to put a magnetic antenna there instead of on the back of the jeep on the TF hinge carrier?

Now that the jeep is mine, I used it for a couple of days before it goes for the let's say more urgent mechanic repairs and maintenance we identified at the inspection. But there was some points that my mechanic didn't saw at the inspection for passing me between 2 jobs and mainly focusing on mechanic stuff... The floor on the driver side was kind of really soft compare to my both precedent JKU. I should have spot this before to buy it but anyway, it's an older jeep and with all the salt they see here in Quebec province, it's unfortunately maybe normal with the lack of maintenance the jeep had, and knowing that water was entering also in my both other jeeps.
With the rain of the last days, the floor were all wet..
So I decided to ripoff all the inside carpet to see what was wrong.. And to my surprise, ok not that surprise
It's when I realized how bad the condition of the jeep was and I remembered having see some guys bedlining their jeep tub interior accross the past years..
Being in that bad position with my old and wear jeep, the imminence of a project was evident. But now let's see if I can tackle it and how long it will take and how much it will cost me!
Chances are I kept a long list of new and used components and upgrades I planned to put originally on my 2011 JKU then to my 2013 JKUR 10A.
I'm curious to see how it will turn!

Looks like I forgot to make my homework before to buy. I knew it was possible to go on Jeep.ca or something like this and to get the build list from Chrysler/Jeep. So I made it late, at least to know what gears ratio I got, and obviously D30 F/D44 R, but with 3.21 gear ratio. Was hoping to have the 3.73 but nop. Will have to live with them for a while.. I found some 4.10 gears for sell that will fit my D30/D44 diffs, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I also have some C-gussets, lca skids to weld on it and a nitro sleeve to make stronger the front axle, but it's still a D30, and I think it's probably better to wait some time and find some rubi D44's take off, and then weld my things on it, or maybe a trust instead of sleeve, will see
Chisel time!
Floor have to be cleaned under the heat/sound deadning that was showing rust and/or water/calcium infiltration under.
Everything just chunked easily! It was like dried..

Engine maintenance time:
Both manifold were cracked, so we changed them, and 1 bolt on each side had head topped and hard to removed..
Head gasket changed.
Thermostat gasket changed.
Water pump changed.
6 new spark plugs and wires.
Left axle joint was creaking so bad when turning, so we changed it before bad things happens while driving.
Sorry, I'm not a pro mechanic, so maybe I didn't explain well things here, and anyway, I'm still learning and reading on these jeep stuff and just trying to make it correctly.
I took advantage that the jeep was on the lift to ditch the chrome mopar sidestep I didn't liked, and to chopped pinch seem on each side. Not sure I trimmed them enough, but it should be better than nothing for sure. Anyway I can cut more as needed anytime in the future.
Then sanded the areas a little bit since there was superficial rust, cleaned and touched up with 2 thin coats of base primer.
Some red rock rattle can touch up will come over before to install my trimmed rubi rails.. at least to avoid winter make it a lot worst..

By the time my mechanic was working on the jeep, I had time to find my front bumper bought new in 2014 but now collecting dust since october 2015 from when I had to sell my first 2011 JKU. Also pulled the trigger on a used cheap rear OEM bumper for the moment, so I will be able to install them before to drive jeep home. Also got a deal on some used/like new OEM fog lights. I installed them in the bumper, but be carefull guys, fog lights was from a newer model (2014 I believe) and we found that it was not the same connectors than initial years. So 2007 to 2010 have a connector model, and then 2011 to 2017 have a different one...if i'm not wrong!

I know 1 or 2 manufacturers were fabricating front tub panel for my rusted perforated floor on driver side, but I was kind of late to buy them online, and 4WP were selling them also but not sure if they had them stock, without saying the store is like an hour and half of driving just to get there.
So we decide to use steel, with a little bit thicker gage than originally and bend it to match what we needed to patch all the removed rusted section.
Doing that, we discovered the front part of the tunnel where the front of the seat bolt was also rusted badly. So we had to repair this at the same time.
I know, the weld is kind of big and ugly, but eh, it will be covered with bedliner and hided under Quadratec floor mat, so it was not an issue for me.. and it's not a brand new jeep!

My 2008 Sahara don't have the u-connect/bluetooth option and I got catched 2 times talking to cell phone before with my previous 2011 JKU. So I really wanted to have the possibility to talk without having fear to get pulled again for that reason. Also we know a CB is a must in a jeep, and it was something I didn't had before in my jeeps. I scored again an almost new Cobra LX29BT for not too much money. I hope to be able to receive phone calls accross my CB unit, and it's still legal to communicate to CB, so I should be good!
And by the time my jeep was still at the shop to finish the floor, I couldn't really worked on it for prepping all the tub for bedlining.
In the past years, I looked at where poeple were installing their CB unit, and I didn't really liked where they were puttting them, except 1 guy that fabricated is own overhead console. After some reflexion, it's where I wanted mine, out of the view on the dash, and not disturbing legs area or glove box/center console. Also the only o/head console I really liked was the Tuffy one, but I didn't like the price that goes with it. Let's say I'm on a kind of budget build, So I decided to fabricate something derived from his (SHREKICON) concept.
Of course it' not finished on the pictures..

Then it was time for sanding, scuffing, cleaning, and prepping the interior. Never did that before, it was kind of time comsuming, but I think it is worth it.
I was sure I took picture of everything completed, but I probably lost them somewhere..
