I use my iPad, And the app I use is called MOTION-X GPS. Hands down the best GPS I've used. I even use it on reconnaissance and missions (active army not a pedophile lol) awesome app! You can also get it for iPhone too.

I use a garmin etrex20 with the road mapping for road and if I'm off road or hiking I swap the memory card out for the topo maps.

Nexus 7 and Backcountry Navigator Pro. Like the iPad universe, use of a tablet gives you way more capability. Do be aware that for the iPads, you'll either need a GPS adapter of some sort, or to have the cell-connected version of the iPad (don't need to be on the cell plan, but the cell hardware is also where the GPS chip is located). Here are a few sample displays from my Nexus 7 ...

Here's a video on my install (apologies for how poor the audio gets--I've gotten much better with video, so please feel free to enjoy some of my later work) ...

I use two. An iPad Mini with Topo Maps for iPad for off road and Motion-X GPS for on road. iPads with the 4G option have a GPS chip in them. I also use a Garmin Oregon. The Oregon and the Colorado will both do Topo and on road.

Used to have an indash Kenwood Gps/stereo. Replaced it with a Kenwood stereo and a Garmin Montana 650. In dash units are useless. No lifetime updates, and can't load topo maps.
Installed city nav in the Montana and it does everything.

I use the iPad mini with cellular/GPS chip and the Gaia GPS app for trails, etc. This app is, in my opinion, better than anything else out there; can get 15' USGS quads for the entire US, drop/save waypoints, routes, etc, and it interfaces with iMaps to provide directions for the paved road part of the trip. The app also works on your smart phone (a single $20 purchase for iPhone/iPad) for those times you're actually walking instead of driving.

But I also plug waypoints into the 430n head unit of the JKUR, and use them both together.

With this set-up, I no longer bring my laptop with GPS software teathered to my hand-held Garmin GPS; less hassle and essentially as accurate.

iPad 2 with GPS upgraded with Bad Elf 1000 30-Pin iPod/iPhone/iPad GPS Receiver dongle for more accuracy.
I use Gaia GPS it rocks! Very simple to use and was only $9.99 from the app store. Gaia GPS | Topo Maps and Hiking Trails App for iPhone, iPad, and Android

I use the etrex 20 as well. I download all my trails from traildamage.com, and I have my Garmin Nuvi set up with a waypoint for each trail (starting point). With those waypoints I can select a trail just like an address and it will take me right to my trail.
