4Low is your friend
when you hear the wining of the gears though, if you're not above 2nd gear shift up to make it easier, or switch to 4Hi so the resistance of low gear does use excessive gas

4L is great.

I usaully just pop into 4L at the beginning of the ride and leave it. As long as you are moving slow you should have no problems. This way you dont have to be moving a little (when your stuck) to place it into 4L !!

I unlock my axle's when going down hill in snow or mud.
it's alot easier to keep it going straight with 2 wheels sliding then 4.
I prefer not to slide down sideways.

i acutally used toads advice last week at rausch--
used my E-Brake as a faux locker, and tried a bit of the 2 feet method

I love my auto. Its one less thing to think about when trying to figure out if i should rub the tree or drop off the cliff...

The best piece of advice I've ever received about wheeling with an auto:

Don't go alone. Bring a buddy in another rig.

and a shovel.
