KCTW, I was just thinkin about a different way to mount the spare. I like yours. I was thinkin about an angle too, but UNDER instead of over. I'll have to draft one up to see if it's feasable.

BTW... that hitch is BADA55, weather it's functional or not.

OK, here's some semi-good pics of the roof rack I had to fashion the first week I had the JKU. We do Living History events (18th Century) and have lots of tent poles and stuff. It worked great. Only weighs a couple of lbs, doesn't damage the top, and is very small. I could make it a lot nicer looking but it was a one day thing. Rear piece straps to D-rings above the side window, using another set on the inside to back it up. Works great. Gotta paint them. The front piece straps down to a chain link I put under the upper hinge bolt.

The other pic is the grab handles I braided up. Similar to the para-cord ones everyone makes, but I like the twist. I learned to do this from my friend who made my powder horn and uses this braid for the plug lanyards.

Here's my biggest home-made piece. It's a roof rack that I had built for my Durango a few years ago but it fit too perfectly in the JKU. So I 'borrowed' the mounting to the seatbelt bolt idea from some company (I forget) and got a couple of hang-up straps from the Depot. It needs another good paint job but it works well. I put the dog bed up on top and the dogs can see out (Corgis) and I can still pack stuff underneath. The net hanging under works great for loose stuff so it doesn't roll all over. And each piece can be used individually. The mounts don't interfere with the rear seat.

Obviously I'm going to have to find another solution for the rear straps when I put on the soft top.

Default Modified Thule Spare Me Rack

I purchased this rack used for $50 to carry my MTB. I prefer not to carry my road or tri bikes by the top tube being they're carbon.
I have a XPORT 2 bike hitch that I use when transporting both bikes or mine & my wife's. However, when just carrying one bike o be able to open my tail gate door without having to take off my bike.

Thule rack upside down
Holder arm:
3/4 pvc snap on tee; 3/4 pipe adapter, 3/4pvc pipe, pvc cap, Yakima ratchet strap

cross member: 1"x48" square aluminum tubing

Bike trays cut 17" held on with carriage bolts
