Default Side-mount Jerry Can Carriers for the JK

I've got thousands of on- and off-road miles on the side-mount jerry can holders on my LJ, and for me it's been a really great place to carry extra fuel when I might need it. On my trip last summer up the Dalton Highway to the Arctic Ocean, I carried one full can on each side - there's 250 miles between fuel stops on the Dalton, so it's not a place to be running on fumes hoping you make it to the gas stop.

The recent Jeep Africa concept has side-mount jerry can holders, although they're not really practical since the low mounting position they chose requires that the cans have an angle cut across the bottom front corner in order to fit between the back of the flare and the front of the door:

I've been working on a side-mount for the JK, and I've come up with a design that can carry jerry/NATO cans or Rotopax containers. The mount would install with no drilling or modifications to the Jeep. It would look something like this:

Either two 2-gallon Rotopax containers or one five gallon jerry, NATO or Sceptre can could mount on each side. Unlike on the Africa concept, it mounts the cans higher so unmodified cans can be used.

The next step is to fabricate a prototype and install it on my JK, but before I do that I'm posting it here to get any feedback you might have. What do you think of the idea? Any suggestions/comments/criticisms?

Nice concept as I really like the Africa vehicle. I suggest you post this to the Expedition/Overland thread on this forum, I think you'd get lots of feedback there.

Very cool idea! I am currently trying to figure out where I can mount a couple. This seems like a very cool mounting position.

Yes, please move forward with this design. There was someone here who actually did it but never bothered sharing how he had it mounted to the panel even after being asked several times from other members. I guess he was too cool for school.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll be making up a couple of prototypes next week, I'll post photos once I've got them installed.

The " No drilling or modification" to the Jeep is excellent , great way to have Camping, " Bug-Out " supplies packed , ready to install and go. Sign me up for a pair !
More storage : All that wasted space inside the spare tire mounted on the tailgate ; How to utilize that ?

I'd love something like this on my JKU. Especially something that could "drop in" with minimal bolting, just for camping/overlanding. But even if installation was more permanent, I'd still want it
