2016 Jeep Wrangler to lose the solid axles to reduce weight
Ready the pitchforks
According to a recent report, the 2016 Jeep Wrangler could be radically different than its predecessor.
Job postings suggest the model will be significantly lighter which has raised speculation that it could eschew the solid axles and coil-link suspension that gives it unparalleled off-road prowess.
Jeep CEO Mike Manley declined to confirmed the switch but told Automotive News "We're already in an environment where it's a challenge to produce a vehicle in that way [with solid axles], and it's going to get harder." He went on to say the Wrangler is "fundamental to our DNA" but it's "going to become progressively harder to make sure that the vehicle meets all of the standards that are required for it."

Yeah, I read a similar article last night. And subsequently shed a tear.

It may impact sales at first, but a lot of new buyers won't know the difference after a while.
People thought it was over for the Wrangler when they did away with the leaf springs.

Two things:
1. Isnt the next model delayed until 2018?
2. I wheeled with a top Jeep Engineer at EJS. His exact words on IFS were "Over my dead body." Jeep understands the success of the JK and the game plan is to make small incremental changes to make sure they dont hurt sales. His words, not mine.

Long overdue, if Jeep knows how to properly engineer a solid axle vehicle there's little evidence of it; the thousands of posts on this forum about death wobble, rattles, bolt replacements, loose steering. If Jeep can't engineer a correct solid front axle they definately should go IFS.
