We went 33"s, LT285/70R17D Hankooks. Redid the speedo and a tune with a Flashcal and am finding that with our 3.73's this is a great set up. No shift issues on long hills on the freeway, great all around performance, operating within the power band. My Jeep is setup more and more like Marks everyday and we chatted about tires and weight and performance a bit before I got my tires and wheels, as we travel to where we wheel, like Mark does. I doubt I'll ever go to a larger tire and am happy with the decision to go 33". If I do go larger, I'll probably go 4.56.

I'm in the south hills of Pittsburgh and know what you're going through. I went with 33's (on 3.73's + Procal) bc it saved me over $2000 during my build. My '12 JKU is more than capable at anything I've thrown at it, with my Toyo OC M/T's I rarely even need to put it in 4wd. I did notice the lag in performance from upping the tire size, 4.10's would be perfect for meaty 33's in Pittsburgh IMO. My GF has 3.21's on 33 A/T's with the 3.8 engine and it loves to rev all day everyday up the hills, poor transmission ;( .

I reinforced the front axle with sleeves, gussets, HD bj's, and skids even before the 33's were installed. I plan on 35's when these tires wear out and will put in 4.56's with Eaton Trutrac's at that time. By then I'll have a 3rd vehicle and this JKU will be more of a weekend warrior instead of my DD.

Just tossing out a bump up for this. I went with 285/70/17 again on my 2014. 3.21 gearing and it's actually REALLY GOOD. Better than I was expecting. There is no need for me to go bigger. We are doing more overlanding than rock crawling so bigger tires are not needed. I tuned the Jeep using the appcar-DiagFCA program. I am still trying to work out the pressure sensors. But it's driving perfect.

I think what makes 33's "look wimpy" is a lift to big for the tires, and that really goes with any size tire, a lift should be just big enough that the tires clear while going over an obstacle, 33's will get through more than a lot of people give them credit for. 35's look wimpy with more lift than they need

+1. I've passed a jeep on the way to work a couple times this week that has, I believe 37s, and a nice DT rear axle. It looks completely stupid due to the dang 5-6" of lift, or whatever it is, they have it on.

Kojack - what you have going there looks good for your jeep.

I'd be very wary of just going to 35" tires. 95%+ of Jeeps with 35"+ tires just look downright trashy. It can be done correctly i.e. with proper fenders for the tread width, proportionally sized lift, and then also making sure you're regearing, axles, etc. Most people don't though.
