Bad News: Chrylser delaying redesigned Jeep Wrangler until 2018
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I just saw this...
Chrysler Reportedly Delaying Updated Dodge Avenger, Grand Caravan, and Jeep Wrangler
Someone commented on the story though and had some good points. He said:
Delaying the Wrangler refresh, specifically, makes sense for several reasons.
#1 - the Toyota FJ Cruiser, the Wrangler's only serious offroading competitor, is being discontinued after 2014. They sell slightly more Nissan XTerra's per year than FJ's (~16K vs ~13K, vs ~140K Wranglers), but the offroading aftermarket support isn't as great. Hummer is gone as of the GM bailout, not that they were a serious offroading competitor anyway.
#2 - Extending any model Wrangler's design only helps to reduce the costs for aftermarket parts, because every year of extension is another ~140K customers for bumpers, body parts, engine mods etc. And now that the Wrangler has a decent engine, there's no rush to upgrade.
Many people will say "What does Jeep care about XTerra/FJ sales that, together, are 1/5th of their annual Wrangler sales", and to the sales forecasters at Chrysler that's probably right. But to the customer base for these vehicles, this is a legitimate issue and less innovation (on Jeep's part) or competition (on Toyota's part) are a problem.

I'd actually prefer they delay a significant redesign. Quite honestly, I think it's absolutely stupid that sales are driven off of new designs, and not improving and perfecting existing designs.
Look at the following of the XJ. They made that same basic box through the year 2001, and I believe the original design was created for the 1984 model year. People still love it. If they still sold the XJ, I'd absolutely buy one.

From what I read previously, they werent going to incorporate a diesel engine (if at all) until the new redesign. If it's not getting a redesign for another few years, I'm assuming that means the diesel version would get pushed back too. Of course, all of this is heresay...
