Default Proper Way to clean out Jerry cans??

I have two newer Jerry cans that I picked up from Quartsite, AR back in January and am just getting around to cleaning them out. They didn't have any fuel in them at the time but they had an oil smell with black and orange sludge inside. I used hot water and dish detergent to get some of the sludge out but it didn't all of it out. Anyone have any ideas on what I can use to get them cleaned? there is no rust on the inside so I don't think I need to throw any bolts or rocks inside. But I am open to any ideas from anyone who has done it before.

Thanks in advance

Diesel fuel. Put about a quart n, shake it up, do that a few days over. It will dissolve crud, an clean it. Drain and fill with petro of choice.
