Default Stuck in drive but not really

2007 automatic....I get home put it in park turn the engine off but on the dash showed me still in drive. Will not let me turn engine back on. I have tried to loosen the break cable which allowed me to shift but the dash still reads drive, I also disconnected the battery with the hopes when I reconnect it would recognize it was in park but that was more of a pipe-dream fix. Clueless, please help.

Never opened one up but sounds like a position sensor

on older vehicles it would be the neutral safety switch , probably similar here but maybe an integrated unit

I've seen this a lot when the shift cable beaks at the trans.
