Default Towing with the JK

Hello! I've researching for some time now, the tow capabilities of our JK's . 3500 pounds is very disappointing. Can someone explain how is possible that my 1997 4runner can tow more (5000 pounds) than our Jk? Is it safe to assume that if Chrysler decides to offer one if these days a diesel options for the JK ( v6 3.0 Eco diesel of the 2014 GC) that the towing of the JK will be 7000 pounds just like the 2014 diesel GC?

What year, body, and gears is your JK?

Nobody has come up with an absolute answer to why the limit is 3500 lbs on some Jks.

I tow a 2500ish pound boat with 2 door sport, 3.21's and 35's. Is it awesome no, but it does the job. Just know it won't stop on a dime, but in no way does it feel unsafe.

Needless to say, properly geared stock jk could probably do a lot more. But stopping is always number one for towing!!

Short wheelbase vehicle = low tow rating. Take a long/heavy trailer and tow it behind a Jeep and you will find out quick why its only 2000/3500 for 2dr/4dr. Add in some wind and its downright scary.

Because the hitch is attached to a crossmember, not the frame rails.......and.....because it is a convertible....and......because Wranglers have high centers of gravity.....and......they have short wheelbases (2 doors).....and....weak brakes......and......limited cooling (especially pre 2012). Engine and tranny wise, the 3.6 mated with the WA580 can tow up to 5000-6200 pounds (see 2012 Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango)...but the rest of the Jeep isn't made to be a tow vehicle.....at least that is how the Chrysler engineers and lawyers fee.

Its a warranty thing. They recommend a lighter range of towing to minimize warranty drivetrain claims.

Well if that is the case, then even we ever get the diesel option on the Wrangler, it will probably never be rated at 7000 pounds towing capacity, like the 2014 Diesel Grand Cherokee.
