Towing motorcycle trailer cross country--need advice
Hey, all. I'll be relocating from Colorado to northern Virginia in January and would like to trailer my bike out with me.
I have a 2014 2 door Willys edition. Bike weighs about 600 pounds. The U-Haul trailer looks great but weighs 1200 pounds to start, so that would basically max out my capacity. I would like the option of putting some boxes and such on the trailer in order to load more.
I need some advice on trailers to use or options for my move. I have a hardtop.
Thanks.

Will UHaul rent to a Wranger owner?
Last I checked UHaul wouldn't rent to a Jeep Wrangler tow vehicle.
If you do use an open trailer don't put a cover on the bike as the paint will wear off from the flapping.
Also make sure the tie downs don't rub.
Good Luck

I've rented a 5x8 enclosed trailer from uhaul with my 2 door and they didn't have any issues with it. I originally tried to rent it and they wouldn't let me because I didn't have trailer wiring (completely understandable) so I ordered the plug and play harness from q-tech and went back and they handed me the paperwork. I had it loaded down and the jeep handled it surprisingly well till I got to some hills. The only reason their tow ratings are so low is because they're classified as convertibles.

Our local UHaul won't rent a trailer to a Wrangler unless you have a hard top installed on it. I would shop around for a trailer to buy. There was a used 5x10 enclosed trailer for sale here for $1000. If you don't want to keep it you can always sell it again at your destination. Once you have one you will probably want to keep it providing storage is not an issue.

U-Haul says that as long as the Jeep is equipped with a hardtop, all is well.
The 4'x8' trailer is 850 pounds empty, so at least that leaves some space for load in addition to the bike. That's a suggestion I actually hadn't considered. This is the first time I'm moving so far and hauling something with my own vehicle, so I'm completely ignorant here.
Much appreciated.

I have a 2 door hardtop, lifted 3 inches and have pulled my Harley Fatboy (750 lbs) with a uhaul open trailer several times. Never had any issues with rental or handling. Their trailers are heavy so you have to pay a little more attention to upcoming stops but otherwise no problems.
