Planning a trip to Ocracoke Island Outer Banks NC
My wife and I are planning a trip up to the Outer banks/Ocracoke Island NC in August. I have not been before, so what do i need to know about the island? Where are the good restaurants/bars/fishing holes. What are the best things to do on the island?
This will also be the first week long trip I've ever taken in my JEEP. It will be 800mi one way from Tampa-Ocracoke. I have an 07 2Dr X and we will be packing myself, my wife, and our German Shepherd. I'm looking for budget friendly ideas to store luggage out side the vehicle or up and out of the way somewhere. I have a hitch tray that i will be using to carry our bikes. I wish I had $1000 to drop on a roof rack, but that is just not in the cards. Any other suggestions?

Hi. Well we just got here sunday. Good winds restaurant is really good in waves. That's were we are staying. If you have to commute the ferry really kind of stinks. We wanted to take a trip to see the wild horses on your island. The schedule is every half hour. The ride is 55 min long between the 2 islands. It's $50 for a beach pass if you jeep on the national reserve. Here's a pic of my jeep on beach today.

We tend to stay in Avon. The restaurant we prefer is, Oceana's Bistro in Avon. They have a wing night, and a taco night. They also have cheap PBR. If you guess the card symbol, on the cap you get it free. They also have a couple micro brews on tap. Also check out the Orange Blossom Bakery & Café, in Hatteras (Buxton), for breakfast. The apple uglies are awesome. I usually get the Bagel Burner, for breakfast.

Check out this beach access link. It has a google maps link showing all open beach ramps.

I actually really like the ferry rides. It's a chance to get on a boat! Plus driving up the outer banks is much more scenic! There are a few light houses along the way that you should check out.

Thanks for the reply everyone. We will be staying in a house for the week on Ocracoke. I didn't think about taking a day trip to Hatteras. I don't have a problem with boats. Was the $50 ticket one way or round trip, and did you have to make a reservation for your Jeep?

Off road permit is $50, for a week, or $120 annually.
