But are they useable? I am more worried about not being able to see next to me than the legal part of it. I have found that driving without mirrors really isnt that easy.

Do you want to double the pull?
You could use "deck block" pulleys to get it closer to the ceiling. Do a Google for "Peerless deck block pulleys" and you'll see what I mean.
Originally, I had written a response about using double pulley to halve the winding speed. Thought I was pretty smart. Then an hour or so later it hit me. I deleted that message because it was totally wrong. No one had commented on my stupidity yet so maybe now they won't need to.
Good job with your design. I may steal some of it for storing my hardtop. Luckily I have 14' ceiling height so perhaps I can use double pulley to cut the winch speed in half.

How long do you leave the top hoisted up at a time? I'm getting ready to purchase an electric hoist and curious if I need a secondary latch/lock of some sort to keep the top from falling. I plan to leave mine up about a week at a time.
