thanks racer. how did you plug the hole in the gate? Did you just cut the wires off the grommet and re-use it?

thats exactly what I did. seems to work perfectly fine.

Thank you for this thread, it saved me tons of time!! Instead of tapping into the wires behind the brake light, I tapped into the ones under the carpet ontop of the rear deck (directly above the tail light.

Does anyone elses brake light flash when they close/open the rear gate?

you can purchase that little black plug that is made for there that you see in the pic.
someone on here said they got it from the dealer and they thought this was the Part #55397112AA

Mine is an '07 and I'm having this same problem -- can't get the wiring diagram for my year to load right now, but it's suspicious that the black wire is not the ground.

Also, I did not really have a white wire with a "tan" stripe -- mine was more gray.

I just realized this tonight, so I'll pull it apart tomorrow and post up with what I find.
