Rugged Ridge 17606.70 axle-back muffler/exhaust Review
Just put this on a few days ago. As you can see from the pics, it sits nice and high. Lots of ground clearance for backing up in tight rocky places without taking out the muffler.
The muffler fits in between the studs that hold the muffler heat shield on, otherwise those (rather long) studs would potentially hit a muffler this close to the heat shield. This was a good time to take off the heat shield and clean it, and add fender washers under the nuts. Replacing the rubber hangers that support the muffler was also in order.
Here's a view from the back -- Note the stainless exhaust tip exiting on the far right, just barely visible.
This side view shows the exhaust tip in the foreground, and the muffler inlet tubing in the background.
From looking at the muffler inlet before installation with a flashlight, it appears to be a chambered design with V (delta) shaped baffle(s) reminiscent of the Flowmaster 40 Delta.
As far as sound goes, to me it's fairly loud with full throttle at 5000+ RPM, and one can definitely hear when to shift despite any imaginable wind and road noise. Normal conversation can be had at 2500 RPM cruising, there's no drone, and the idle is mellow. The tone has a lot of base (low frequencies). My old muffler was a straight-though hi-tuck (with a loose baffle tinging noise) that sounded much more sports-carish (more treble, less base) and the difference was immediately noticeable.
There is a sound clip/video, and other info at Rugged Ridge 17606.70 JK Heavy Duty Off-Road Muffler, 07-15 Jeep Wrangler (JK)
Lifetime warranty, and the installation was easy.
