Default Third brake light LED mod

This is a super easy mod for a third brake light.
I have the AEV tire carrier.

I got two 10" red LED strips from auto zone for $20 bucks
Alcohol to clean surfaces so the double sided tape sticks well
Note if the lights don't have 3M brand double sided tape look for the ones that do it sticks better.
So all I did was ran the third brake light wire inside the carrier so is out of the way connected the wires from the light to the stock connector.

Cleaned the surface and adhered the light strip to the edge where the tire mounts on the carrier cut the excess light strip the light does not face the outside so all you get is diffused light within the wheel and lights it up.

How did you run the wire?

I have an Or Fab carrier and had to run wire to the passenger side or the rear door, then along the tire carrier back to center. I reused the stock brake light and fabbed up a piece of metal to mount it to. My problem is that I have a shit ton of wire run to be able to open the tire carrier separate from the rear door.

The AEV carrier moves with the door so all I had to do was plug it to the stock light plug.
On the other hand to run a separate wire for the spot light in the back and I ran it inside the door.

Probably not "legal" as there is no DOT/ SAE code on the lights but it would depend on your state inspection. Does it specify a particular standard? VA does and to get around it I mounted some 3/4" LED's on top of the carrier but still inside the wheel recess to face rearward. It is legal and it's just as visible as this is.

Sweet. Here in New York looks like I only need "at least two" stop lamps. I believe there are federal lawyers that require the car makers to put on a third, but I don't see that as applying to me... (Your solution does actually have a third light visible from at least 500 feet...)

"Stop Lamps
40. Stop lamps. (a) Every motor vehicle, except a motorcycle, operated or driven upon the public highways of the state, if manufactured prior to January first, nineteen hundred fifty-two, shall be equipped with at least one stop lamp which shall display a red to amber light visible at least five hundred feet from the rear of the vehicle when the brake of such vehicle is applied.
(b) Every motor vehicle, except a motorcycle, operated or driven upon the public highways of the state, if manufactured on or after January first, nineteen hundred fifty-two, shall be equipped with at least two stop lamps, one on each side, each of which shall display a red to amber light visible at least five hundred feet from the rear of the vehicle when the brake of such vehicle is applied."

May have to try this.

I have seen this DIY project and had to take it on. I'm as cheap as they come and had to see how cheap I could do this for. I used a used aluminum frying pan and purchased a 10 piece set of led lights for a grand total of $7.90. I'm happy with the end result.
