I tend to agree because of the look and feel of the vehicle when he jostled it. Is there supposed to be 2-3 inches of movement in the transfer case?
No. The transfer case should not move 2-3". You have a broken mount, loose bolts, or worn a worn bushing.

Hello, thanks for the reply. So I have done about 80 percent of what you suggested. I really appreciate your time and expertise. So, could fixing the mount or worn bushing stop the dw?

I wouldn't classify vibrations from broke or worn engine/tranny/transfer case mounts as death wobble.

It sounds like you have multiple things going on.

I had some clunking and it was due to loose swaybar links.

First I found the drag link was shot at the steering knuckle, replaced that and the shimmy decreased, but didn't go away. I pulled into work with the shimmy present and had someone help me check and found tons of play in the tie rod that hadn't shown up before. Also found my drivers side lower ball joint is going and the passenger side is gone. You can feel the clunk when you lift the tire easily. Fixed the tie rod, now just waiting for a day to replace the ball joints. Thanks for this write up planman, I feel like an expert now lol.

Thank you. I really appreciate it.

I like to see people fix their problems instead of letting an untrained dealer service department mask them with new steering stabilizers.

Default 99 TJ with death wobble

I see that you mention JK jeeps, but what about TJ.
I have a bad case of death wobble. I intend to go through the checklist, but wanted to ask if there was anything else regarding the TJ.

Not knowing anything, I replaced the track bar and the larger bolts.

I'm gonna do the checklist tomorrow.
I watched a bunch of your videos

Thx

The design principles are the same.

The torque specs and bolt sizes are different.

After inspection, track bar passenger side was loose. Also the Pittman arm has considerable play. I relighted track bar and I guess I'm going to try and fine a new bushing for the Pittman.

If the pitman arm has play at the box, the steering box sector shaft may be damaged.

If the drag link end at the pitman arm is bad, then that can be replaced.
