If you spin a tire and catch it on a rock or whatever, do you really think that there is enough strength difference between 5.13 and 5.38 that one would grenade and the other would be fine? Maybe it's time to move up to 60's or better?

Lots of opinions on the 'best' ratio. I have a 3.8 4door auto. Went to 5.13's with 33's. Then 35's. Then 5.38's with the 35's, and eventually to 37's. 5.13's were good, but I like the 5.38's better for both 35's and 37's.

You'll want a tuner if you don't already have one, so start looking at Superchips/Diablo/whoever. And just a heads up, even with 5.38's you will feel a lack of power on the hills and might start thinking forced induction.
How were the 5.13's with 33's? Would you suggest that? My fear is it possibly dropping into 2nd near 70 on the freeway

I didn't mind it at all, and had no issues with over-revving. But, I tend to like higher rpm's with my 3.8 pig, and I am conscious of the fact that it can drop down a gear on occasion. I just let up on the gas pedal and it drops right back down. Do you plan to keep your foot on the floor?

I use cruise control A LOT. I've found sometimes when I'm going say 68 on the freeway and hot resume (say it was set at 70), sometimes it will drop to second just to accelerate 2 MPH. With 4.10's and 33's it's just about at redline in second gear at 70!

So I literally read all the 20+ threads on 5.13 vs 5.38 and am completely torn as it seems to be a 50/50 split from the experts and other jeepers.

To add to the situation I just got orders to move to New England (MA) where altitude will no longer be an issue, then again who knows where I will end up in the military.

Planman mentioned he swapped from 5.13 to 5.38 in his wife's jeep and it was a night and day diff. But I have read others mention that ratio will scream on the highway which kinda worries me on the 2200 mile trip in the near future.

Ya 5.38s are weaker but I don't hard core crawl or spin tires. I know evo/dynatrac warned against running 5.38 in the d44. I don't plan on moving up to 37s with this jeep anyway so I'm leaning towards 5.13....

The people who post "you'll be screaming on the freeway" simply haven't got a clue about 3.8 auto's. They are basing it off of their 3.6, or their 6spd, or their old yugo, or whatever.

Pull up the 'JK' gear charts and look for yourself. The ones jpop made are broken down by both engine and transmission, and seem to be right on the money for the 3.8's. Assuming a 34" actual measured height on your 35's, the difference between the two ratios will be 119 rpm at 70 mph. 2450 vs 2569. Screaming?

If 5.13's make more sense to you, go for it, just base the decision off of valid information...

Default 5.13

2009 Dr 3.8 on 35"s here... I had my 5.13 done recently by Edge Automotive in Englewood. Chris is great guy give him a call. I also had my d30 sleeved and gusseted and installed a TJM air locker in the rear. Love it... just recently went back to Moab and the set up was PERFECT. Much more enjoyable to drive and is a beast in 4lo. PM me if you have any questions.

5.13s and 35s will do just fine. I did that for 2 years. But if you do end up at high altitude 5.38s are the way to go.

Whatever you do, don't do 4.88s lol
