Do you have 35's and 5.13's?
So all the goodies for my my wifes 4dr JK are about a week out. 7.5" total lift between all included components including tires.
I have been reading everywhere that the recommendation for an auto trans on 35's is 5.13 gears. However, I was talking with my brother who has been in the 4wd game for many years but never owned a JK (this is our first jeep). He said 4.56 gears. Granted that is what he ran on his TJ and all the gearing is different.
We are in Hawaii so the speed limit is very low here. But when we do move in the future, I still want enough gearing to travel comfortably on the freeway at 70-75mph without revving through the roof.
What say you folks knowing what speed I want to travel at with 35's? And I will not be going with bigger tires in the future. 35's are plenty.

With an automatic, if you have a Rubicon, you want 5.38s. If you don't have a Rubicon, you want 5.13s. You are good up to about 85-90 mph with those gears.
Your buddy who has experience with TJs is thinking about a 3 speed automatic transmission.
At 70 mph with 35s and 5.13s would put you at about 2400 rpm. With 5.38s, it would put you at about 2500 rpm. That is hardly anything for a JK engine.

(I may be displaying my ignorance. -There could be other reasons why the factory Rubicon has 4.10 versus the 3.73 in my X)

I'm running 35's and 5.13 gears and love it. Personally I wouldn't even consider 4.56.
From what I've studied 4.88's will make it feel as if you are running stock tires and not 35's.

5.13 Is as high as you can go with a D30 Front axle, no company sells or even makes 5.38s for a D30 due to the Pinion being extremely small. However the Rubicon having D44 front and rear has the availability to run 5.38s. To the OP Planman is absolutely right 2500 rpms is just about where you will want to be for turning 35 or larger tires.

Agree with Planman as well.
I've got a Rubicon with Auto, 35's and 5.13's. Wish I had gone with 5.38's and now that I plan on moving up to 38's they are something I'm thinking seriously about factoring into the budget to coincide with the change in tire size.

I'm with Planman on this. I've had 5:38's for a bit now and wouldn't dream of going with 5:13's.
DO NOT go with 4:56. Between the JK V-6 and your 4-speed auto, you won't be happy.

That combo of the JK's engine & trans, 5.13s is the way to go for a non-Rubi (I wouldnt even think of getting anything less in gearing). That is what I currently have & am happy with it. However, If ever I upgrade my front axle to a D44 I will be switching to 5.38s. The JK is a different animal compared to the older Jeeps (TJ/YJ)...

Excellent feedback. Much appreciated. I also read in another thread that 5.38 will yield better gas mileage due to the decrease in downshifting. However it looks as if I am SOL since someone in this thread mentioned that the D30 will not support that gear setup.
So 5.13's it is..... Unless a certain BMW M3 owner accepts my offer on his car. Then the gears will have to wait.
One other question about a Yukon rear locker. Opinions?

I don't have Yukon but I do have a Lock Right locker by Richmond and really like it. I read in JP magazine that they seem to be good.
The only thing the magazine said was that Yukon Lockers were to new on the market to now if there long lasting.
