Default Lift/Wheels/tires do I need new gearing?

Hi,

Bought a 2013 Sahara Unlimited with a 3.5" lift, 35's and it's a 6spd.

I've read that these can get away with stock gearing but would need to update gearing if moving up to 37's.

Curious to see what you guys think for my set up, seems to drive/run fine, a little sluggish compared to driving my other cars(a given).

Stock gearing on this one is 3.23 right?

Thanks for all the help!! Here's my Jeep.

Stock would be 3.21

I just put 33's on my 2015 sport and I wish my gears were lower........ will definitely move to 4.88's before moving up to 35's

You can probably live with it for a while.....but over time it's likely to wear you down a bit. It is currently your "normal" and you get used to it......but make no mistake about it, it's not driving/shifting like it should. If you can afford it, a regear would be worthwhile.

You should stay on 35's and do the gears.

What gears would you recommend for this set up?

I plan on staying with the 35's, just not sure of what the best gearing would be, I don't want to go too low/high numerically.

Search for JK gear chart and other gear threads. Will come right up as this question is asked about twice a week. Your driving may dictate what gear you choose as well such as lots of highway, off road, driving up steep grades, towing. If you are just daily driving around Wisconsin I would think 4.56 would be the sweet spot with 35's

Thanks Dirtman!

Ya, this is my daily driver, as I keep the others in storage/nice weather drivers. It's not too bad right now, just sluggish, I was thinking like 3.5-3.7 would be better? I am going to try and find as many off-roading chances as I can here in WI, but not too many options. I'll look up that chart and see what it says. 4.56 seems really high(numerically) to me. I am looking at gears for my Viper right now and anything over 3.73 is almost un-streetable and my SRT8 Jeep has 3.73's, I know there's a huge difference, just not used to the terminology for Jeeps.

The viper and SRT8 have big hp and can push the higher gear ratios and are built for max speed. The JK is not and needs the lower gears to make up for the anemic power plant.

I run 5.38 gears on mine.

Yes, VERY true.

So I was reading one the gearing posts, mines a 2013 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited. So is it correct that I have Dana 30 in front and 40 in rear, with 3.21 gearing all the way around?

Is it as simple and just adding the new gears, or is further modification needed?

I greatly appreciate all of your help and advice, first time with a Wrangler.

There may be some fender or bump stop modification depending on how it is set up now and how you plan to wheel it.
