off road trailer “build"
So after searching online for a decent/available m101 or m416 and not finding anything but $15,000 rigs or POS rust buckets,
I gave up and started looking at other possabilities.
After a ton of research I decided to go with a trailer from lowes as my “foundation” and just build onto it.
There’s a chance when all the dust settles that there may not be much of the original trailer left, but I’m ok with that.
Here’s what I bought last night:
Shop Carry-On Trailer 3-1/2' x 5' Wire Mesh Utility Trailer at Lowes.com
I ended up getting it for about $350 out the door, which leaves a lot of room for all the extras i have in mind,
plus i can start using it as a basic (on road) utility trailer immediately (which is really nice)
Its rated at 2,000lbs and seems to pull very well.
When I got it home I moved the axle from above to under the leaf springs and gained about 3.25” of lift.
It had a few tiny rust spots from sitting out in lowe’s garden center for who knows how long, so i brushed the rust off and repainted the entire trailer flat black. I also painted the 15” wheels it came with (which i will use until i mount my 35’s)
I will post some photos of what it looks like right now and some more as the project continues.
should get those photos posted this afternoon.
Future plans include:
two 315/75/16 kumho road venture mt’s 10ply (have two sitting in my garage waiting on wheels)
16” steel sport wheels that match my jeep's (looking for these still, anyone have any they want to get rid of???)
spidertrax 5x4.5 to 5x5 1.5” spacer/adapters
probably different fenders depending on how the 35’s fit
diamond plate paneling and 3/4” plywood to enlose and line trailer (picking this up this afternoon)
thule cargo bars (shopping around still)
tepui ayer rooftop tent (waiting on thule bars)
two jerry cans and mounts (shopping around still)
an adventure trailers multi-axis coupler (this will be the last thing ordered)
any thoughts or ideas are welcome
this should be dominating my workshop space and time for weeks to come
