It is the transmission. I just got done replacing mine for same reason. I had a lot of metal shavings on drain plug magnet. I got a rebuilt transmission from High Gear in Tennessee.

I was afraid of that, did you dissect it further to find exactly what was wrong?

No. I did check around some and it appears to be the gears. I had to send old transmission back for a core charge refund so I did not tear into it.

I think I found my problem I took the boot off for the shifter . The middle boot was ripped so In 4th and 6th gear the rip got bigger . Going to put a new boot on and see if it fixed the noise

Awesome Thanks Donny! Can you fix everything from inside the cab? No need to crawl under? Are you referring to the boot directly underneath the exterior boot?

Yeah everything from the top , the boot under the man one just pops off . Then you can get to the shifter bolt in the rubber bushing mine had a little play so I used a washer on the bolt to lesson the the side to side flex . While I was there I put a rubber hose on the transfer case line where it touches the dash . And I put rubber hose on the heater core lines from inside the glove box
