I just remeasured tire to outboard fender on my stock 255s and I get .75 inches, not the 1.3 I posted above. That gives me an updated stickout of 1.6 inches for the 285s on Pintlers. As much as I would love to go wider, I just can't go to 2 inches of stickout for a 305. I'll be off to Discount Tire today.

as far as i know you only have to measure how much tread is sticking out NOT the side walls .. when i installed mine i went to our local po-po detachment and he told me i was fine ...wasnt happy that i didn't have any mud flaps but tires were fine
Here i a Picture of how much sticks out of the Stock Fenders with 315/70/17 's on Pintler's

Here is a datapoint for a 2008 JKU. Went with 285/70/R17 Dura Tracs. Measured stick out is .6 inches, on the rear, on the Pintlers. Not sure how I lost an inch. For me, I think is was a good choice for the way I use the Rubicon. Looks better than I expected. No lift yet. From other posts, I think tires and wheels will perform as expected, which for me will be perfect. Now I have time to consider other lift choices due to the drop in planed tire diameter. I hope this thread and associated thought process will help other forum members similar to the way the forum has helped me.
