The DynaTrac D44 is a REAL D44. The Rubicon front D44 isnt. It has D30 sized tubes, shafts, and joints. So if I had to choose, it would deffinately be the Dynatrac axle.

I am dealing with this right now too! Can't see paying almost $5K for a Dynatrac 44. I think I will be kicking myself for not stretching for a 60. The Currie D60 fronts are lighter too which may help the on road?!

I wouldn't sport a d60 unless you are running 37s or bigger. For 35s a mopar 44 gussets, truss, and magnum sleeves.... call it a day for half the price.:dontknow2:
Wheel the piss out of the d30, when ANYTHING breaks bend the axle and get insurance to pay for a replacement, take the money and go mopar 44.... even cheaper! |

fust FYI there are many front 44s on EBAY cheap. There is also a set of front and rear rubi 44s with lockers and 5.13 gear ready to roll

No question....If i was going to spend $4K upwards i would spend the extra dime and do it right with the D60's!!
With 35's you are pushing the Mopar D44's to their limit (tube strength, ring gear thickness with deeper gears, and the crap knuckles)...With the D60's you can run 37's with ease and not worry about being broke in the woods (this sucks). You can run 40's with the D60's even if you want so you have expansion room (you will get the itch to go bigger trust me). If you go with Dyanatrac D44's you have a good axle but it is limited to maybe 37's before you start pushing it too hard. You want to spend that much money and then be limited on future mods and expansion... I have watched guys break D60's on 38" tires so nothing is indrestructiable, but I cn tell you that the probability of breaking a 1 ton D60 axle is a LOT less than breaking a 1/4 ton D44 axle.... MOPAR screwed the pooch in my opinion with the D44's on Rubicons...what a joke. |
I'm leaning in the direction of the original poster, I also have a D30 on the front of my Sahara. I have to built in stages, because it's also my daily driver. I, along with just about everyone, want big burley Dana 60's, but as it has been stated before, I don't NEED them, and probably don't wheel hard enough to justify the cost. You don't just throw a D60 in the front and leave the D44 in the back. So a $6K-8K Dana 60 front turns into a $10K-12K front and rear set. Add onto that the new wheels for the bolt pattern, the huge tires you'll want to put on those bad boys, and so on, and so on....it turns out to be a lot more than it looks. So here is what I'm planning on doing.
Dynatrac Pro Rock 44 Housing= $2040.99 (4WD Hardware) ARB Locker= $849.99 (Northridge 4x4) Front and rear Ring and Pinion set with overhaul kit= $549.95 (Northridge 4x4) Superior Evolution Series Driver's Side Axle Set= $409.99 (Quadratec) Superior Evolution Series Pass Side Axle Set= $424.99 (Quadratec) Re-use D30 Steering Knuckles, Breaks, Wheel Bearing= $FREE That is $4275 for a complete front axle and with includes the gear change set for the rear, all from sponsors of JK Forum. (And I didn't subtract for any discounts either) Add in labor if you don't plan on doing the work yourself and your in the $5000 ballpark. I plan on getting an OBA system before I do this so I didn't include it, and I'm sure I missed some little things, but I think I've made up my mind on this, and it'll be within my budget, and I can space the purchacing out as long as I need, because I can't use it until I get everything anyways. |
