Dana 44 5.13 gear strength????

I have 37's on my Rubi and will be upgrading my gearing soon. My first choice is 5.13 gears, but yesterday I was talking to a friend and he mentioned going with 4.88's due to strength concerns. I know deeper gears are weaker, but I am curious is this really a concern? Has anyone suffered any failure with a 5.13 gear set?

Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

Jk gears are thicker than the TJ's..

you also have a front 44. Superior gear told me they have not heard of one gear failure yet.

I know I have a D44 front and rear, that is what causes my concern. On my last truck I regularly broke my D60, although I was running tires considerably larger than 37's and had way more HP than my 3.8V6 will ever put out.

BUT its very good news that to date Superior has not heard of any failures. Thanks for the info.

5.13's

I am going 5.13's and don't believe that strength will be an issue in the JK Dana 44. I ran 5.38's in my TJ and didn't have a problem. The TJ low pinion Dana 44 you could go 5.89's and a Bronco high pinion 44 you could go to 5.38's. Even though the pinion gear gets possessively smaller and slightly weaker each time you go to a numerically higher gear. Another, thing to consider who is making your ring and pinion? I believe only Superior currently makes JK Dana 44 gears and they make a quality product. The rest of the aftermarket community will catch up. I would only put a reputable manufactures gear set into my vehicle not some Chinese, Taiwanese or Indian made crap. It is nothing personal with the race of people. I feel they are lacking a quality product and I try to buy an American produced products when I have the option.

I agree.. With all the Chinese recalls going on right now.. I wouldn't trust any thing made in China in my Jeep if I could avoid it.. Pretty soon, everyone is going to be boycotting Chinese made items and Walmart will end up going out of business.. LOL

i think in a recent mag they explained the top 20 strongest axles, ones that people would normally swap in for an offroad rig. The old TJ 44s were like number 15 and our new 44s were like number 6. They said it was comparable to a danna 60 basically

Which gearing gives best mpg with 35 in tires?

What is the best millage for say 35 in tires: Should I use 4:88 or 5:13 gears

Finally have my 5.13's in and they are really good. Still breaking them in right, but I can at least hold OD on level highway. The GPS has me at 8 MPH over when at 60 and at 65 Im really at 73.... but RPM's are right around 2400 to 2600...

(37's I forgot to mention)

N8!

Auto or Manual? I have an Auto w/35's and 5.13's... I only had about 200 miles when I went to the gears and tires so I can't compare to what the mileage was before, but I can tell you that right now, I'm getting (around town) right around 15-16mpg, not sure of highway mileage yet. And this is at an elevation of 7000', so I imagine closer to sea level, you could certainly be getting better than that. I'm still under 1000 miles on my Jeep, so maybe it'll get better, who knows.
