Does having a winch on ur front bumper effect ur mpg?

If it does effect ur mpg, approximately how much.

Some guy told me that it didn't because it carried weight rather then rolling weight (not sure what that means or if it's even true).

What is u all's outlook on this?

He was referring to sprung vs. un-sprung weight. Yes, inertia will play a larger roll in conveying sprung weight than un-sprung, but any extra weight will result in some degradation of fuel efficiency. The Wikipedia entries on Spung and unsprung mass are better tools than this post at explaiing this. Good luck.

I lost 3mpg with my winch and rr short bumper

Christine 06-14-2011 03:19 PM

My bumper weighs 150 lbs and my winch 70 lbs. It's got to affect it. Don't know how much though.

Rock Hard front and rear bumpers and Superwinch 9.0 did not affect my MPG's

Bingbola 06-14-2011 04:46 PM

Dang this thing is split right down the middle. With people saying it does and others saying it doesn't.

Jeeps are not exactly an aerodynamic vehicle, so what's one more flat surface?

My MPG are unaffected by the addition of my winch and bumper. However what I did notice was about a 1 MPG gain when I added the front skid plate. Go figure

IMHO - anything that adds weight without decreasing wind resistance has to negatively affect MPG. :yup:

You may not see the difference if you are using your jeep computer to measure your gross fuel economy.

Grognard 06-14-2011 06:02 PM

I can see a bumper having an affect, but not sure it is the aerodynamics as much as the weight.

One of the posters said her bumper weighed 150 pounds and winch another 70; my bumper and winch combined don't weigh 150 pounds. The variance in weight between bumpers is huge.

I installed a Shrockworks middy with a Warn 9.5ti. My mileage never changed. This is according to the Jeeps computer mind you.
