Default Impressed with Uniden PRO520XL Range - 60-70 miles!!

Was up on a trail on the back side of Big Bear last week and was clearly talking to someone down the hill in Apple Valley 60-70 miles away...Not bad for a cheap set up!

Impressive range; must have been ideal conditions! What antenna are you using, and where do you have it mounted? Have you done any bonding? Any extra grounding? How's your SWR?

That's the funny part, I'm using a 3' Firestik II mounted mounted between my tail gate and spare tire which is supposed to be "the worst spot"...antenna isnt even properly grounded and my antenna isnt tuned...was on 3N16 just driving around

Actually, if the conditions are right, and they probably were, that range is possible.
May have been a " straight shot" as well.
The other guy may have been yanking your chain as well.

not trying to knock your radio but if its true it has a lot more to do with weather/solar conditions than that particular radio

Yes.....there can be any number of reasons why his range was like that. Sporadic "E" is more likely the reason. To put it simply it's "like" when ground wave propagation conditions are enhanced. This can happen on VHF as well. Sporadic E propagation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Being a ham op, I can understand the how and whys of a
communication of that distance would be accomplished.
But keep in mind, IMHO, most of the members aren't
and while the explaination sounds right to ham ops,
and most of them are like the previous poster stated,
its way over their heads.
JMHO.

Haha yeah you kinda have to be a radio gear head and have some good experience with radios to put it all together.
