I got 3% under invoice OTD without a discount. Dealer only kept $5 of hold back, it's def not the best since you could still get a student discount, a military discount, etc....
Best suggestions
1. Get pre-approved outside the dealership. If you know how much you can actually afford at a good rate you will less likely end up with a higher interest loan from the dealer.
2. Get an e-price. Internet sales don't work on commission but on quantity. Don't say you have an e-price at the beginning, talk them down as much as you can, if they don't budge on price, bring out the e-price it will definitely be much lower then the salesmans', "absolute lowest price "
3. Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate. Expect a lot for slightly less. Don't settle, fight for every dollar and every option you want.

Truecar is a tool to see what invoice price is with the options you want. Invoice is the maximum anyone should pay. You don't have to put in your info to see it.

Most people 3% under invoice are getting the $500 military cash. (2% right there)

I would like to see some proof of people claiming 20% under msrp. Probally got hosed on thier trade in, or it was back when usaa was giving an extra $1000 discount.

MSRP means squat really. They can put whatever number they want there really. It's the dealer invoice that matters, and even that isn't set in stone depending on dealer volume and incentives.

As far as Truecar, I don't buy their pricing either. No way should I be able to do better than the "best truecar price" on my own unless truecar is also full of it.

Yeah, thats a tall claim. Especially since, as you say, the dealer has other ways of shafting you... Like trade in, rust proofing, options' markups, loan rates...

I didn't hit 20% under msrp, I was at 16.3% before taxes and fees (600 total in SC). No USAA incentive for me although I did get that on my 12 last year. My rate was 0.9% and I had no trade or dealer adds. Mine was an ordered unit.
