Just ordered the 285/70/17 same gears, 2009 2dr with 17 inch pintlers 4.7 backspacing. I pulled my hair out for 6 months and decided that bigger is better. I think because you have the 6 speed you will be good.

Plus this allows you to add other mods and have the jeep look proportional. I vote 33's

i have been arguing with myself over the same issue, 265/75 16 or 285. 3:21 gears 6sp 2 door, i want the 285 but am afraid of rubbing, does any one have a pic of 285 /76 16 on the stock steel wheels with no spacers and do they rub. thanks

I think the confusion is around metric sizes, since the two tires you are comparing are just over an effective 3/4" apart in total width and 2/3" in total height. Unless you are at edge, that difference is usually in the noise.

265 mm / 25.4 = 10.4" x .75 = 7.8"
285 mm = 11.2" x .75 = 8.4"

The roughly equivalent LT sizes would be:

32x10.5R16
33x11.5R16


I say roughly because metric size tires tend to be more true to size than LT tires. It could be because the increments are smaller in the metric sizes or just because light truck tires don't need to be as accurate due larger tolerances and tire manufacturers take advantage of this.

The bottom line is you can't clear an additional 3/4" in height and width then go with the smaller tire.

LOL every Jeep owner goes through the same situation when It comes down to tire size.

I know what you mean...I am running 33" tires and sometimes wish I would have gone with 35's But I guess its the same story with everyone I bet those with 37's wish they would have gone with 40's and so on.....

Go bigger, the size difference is so small it'll be tough to notice on highway but offroad you'll know. You can always try the Superchips Flashpaq or other programmer, too.

I think another consideration is if you're going to get a lift or not. I was advised, and I agree by the looks of it, that the 285's will fit without rubbing in daily driving. But if you're wheeling it's a very tight squeeze in there and you will rub.

I played it safe and got the 265/75/16 (load range C) duratracs. No lift and it's great on the road and off-road. I've got an '07 X, 4.10 gears and the automatic. I'm happy.

I went with the 265/75-16, no lift on a 7" rim.

I was not totally displeased with the 3.21 gearing and that tire size, but I was MUCH happier once the Flashpack showed up at my door.

I still may re-gear later, just to get my towing capacity up above 1000 so I can pulll my camper but the tires are no longer an issue.

I'm not gonna sit here and say one is better than the other. I do have the 265s though and am happy with them.

Go with the 33's

These are Wrangler MTR's 275/70/18..they are 33 inches tall..11 inches wide..No spacers..They fit perfect..

You may have a slight rub at full lock on the sway bar...Just adjust your steering stops with a few washers on each side and your good..





You might want to add a TF leveing kit just to give yourself some room for articualtion when your off road..
