Not dumb at all. It actual has an L bracket around the bumper then attaches into the frame. It only looks like it attaches onto the bumper.

I hope this is what you had in mind. I have the 3.8L but maybe it will help. The GOBI rack slightly contacts the snorkel but doesn't affect anything. I installed the rack somewhat loose and tightened everything down once I liked how it fit. I tweaked it before finally wrenching down on the bolts. I had to modify the passenger mirror relocation bracket from Rugged Ridge to fit around the snorkel. I know a question on tops has been answered already, but how many of you find yourselves not putting the top down because of the added steps? I’m worried that, if I go with a Gobi, I’ll find myself too lazy to do the added steps in order to go topless (running a Trektop NX now but wanting to trade to a traditional top).
Also, any issues removing/installing the hard top with the rack? Looks like you can’t do a traditional hoist setup..
