That's what I was thinking in regards to how the truss was made. I just couldn't tell in the pictures Dirtman, I'm not sure of the center section of this Dana 69 but the Dana 30s are cast steel. I've done mine and a few since and none of which have cracked. I used my Lincoln 180c mig with regular L-56 wire... No preheating or anything. I did however ping the welds afterwards. I'm certainly no professional welder, so I know it can be done. Also, even if one or two of the welds would crack, I would imagine that it couldn't be worse than leaving it up welded. Correct me if I am wrong, though.
I also don't see how welding to the center section is much different than gusseting the C's. I'm not trying to argue just simply wondering if there's something I'm missing here.

Yes, you can weld it with a mig and standard wire but is still is going to produce a weak brittle weld that is prone to cracking. It has to do with the chemical reaction of the weld and you typically need to use nickel rod to prevent the reaction. Try welding an upper control arm bracket to the top of the axle housing and see how long it holds. Your last photo of the Inner C is forged steel and welding to it is fine with mig and standard wire.

Took my axles to a good mechanic friend to get geared. Should get them back next week and hopefully start working on the jeep soon.
