This is the Electronics & Sound Systems FAQ. Please browse the topics here first before creating a new post. There no sense in re-inventing the wheel, aka posting the same topic 5 times.

Common Aftermarket Stereo Questions

Q: What size are the factory speakers?
A: Both the front and rear speakers are 6.5" speakers. The roll bar speakers are somewhat shallow mount. Some have better luck with 6.5" up front and 5.25" in the roll bar. You can fit some shallow mount 6.5" speakers in the roll bar.

Q: What do I need to purchase to upgrade my stock stereo to an aftermarket stereo?
A: Do you have the Infinity-upgraded stock system?
  • Yes - You'll want to buy a Metra CHTO-03 harness.
  • No - You'll want to buy a Metra XSVI-6522 harness.


Q: What if I just want to upgrade my speakers only?
A: Do you have the Infinity-upgraded stock system?
  • Yes - You'll need to add a line-level converter in order to get a signal that can be amplified and sent to your new speakers. This requires splicing if you want to retain your OEM radio. The splice must be made AFTER the Infinity amplifier.
  • No - You'll want to buy a Metra 70-6522 harness. This will allow you to splice right into the speaker level outputs of the OEM radio.


Other Harnesses (There are equivalent harnesses made by PAC and Peripheral as well):
Speaker harness: Metra 72-6514
OEM Replacement harness: Metra 71-6522 (for damaged stock harnesses that need replaced)

JK Wrangler Tweaks

Auto-lock at 15 mph with NO auto unlock all when either front door is opened
Insert the key. Cycle the key from insertion position to "on" position 5 times. Upon completing the 5th cycle make sure the key ends in the "on" position, press the Unlock switch up once.

HONK when locking with keyfob
Press and hold the Lock button on the fob for at least 5 seconds. While still holding the Lock button, press the Panic button and release both. Test operation.

One-touch unlock all the doors with keyfob
Press and hold the Lock button on the fob for at least 5 seconds but no more than 10. While still holding the Lock button press and hold the Unlock button. Release both and test.

Lights flash when locking with keyfob
Press the Unlock button on the fob for 4 to 10 seconds. While still holding the Unlock button press and hold the Lock button. Release both and test.

Seat Belt Chime
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, and buckle the driver or front passenger seat belt. Turn the ignition key to the ACCESSORY/RUN position (engine does not need to be running), and wait for the Seat Belt Warning Light to turn off. Within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle, unbuckle and then re-buckle the driver or front passenger seat belt at least three times within 10 seconds, ending with the seat belt buckled. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. A single chime will sound to signify that you have successfully completed the programming.

JK Service Manual

There has been a lot of talk regarding the Jeep Service Manuals. While many of us have the service manual, we need to remember that the distribution of this manual is illegal and should never be encouraged nor discussed.

The service manual is available for purchase from DCX Tech Authority at the following location:

The Part number is 81-370-07063CD and contains the entire manual on a CD for $120. A printed copy is available for $325.

The CD version of the manual is designed specifically for Windows XP or earlier, running Internet Explorer 6. It requires the Adobe SVG Viewer to be installed in order to view wiring diagrams.

A new version of the manual is being developed and will operate on newer operating systems such as Windows Vista in the near future.

Per the manufacturer:
Note: The 2007 Service Manual CD’s with new XML & SVG Wiring Diagrams are not compatible with Internet Explorer 7.0 or the new Windows Operating System "VISTA". A new revised edition CD that is compatible with I.E. 7.0 and Vista will be available soon.

NOTE: I have been told the new Vista compatible version is available by calling TechAuthority and asking for it.

FRONT LAMP AIMING


VEHICLE PREPARATION FOR LAMP ALIGNMENT

1. Check for and correct any burnt out bulbs.
2. If the vehicle is equipped with headlamp leveling, be certain that the headlamp leveling switch is in the 0 position.
3. Repair or replace any ineffective, worn or damaged body or suspension components that could hinder proper lamp alignment.
4. Verify proper tire inflation pressures.
5. Remove any accumulations of mud, snow or ice from the vehicle underbody and clean the front lamp lenses.
6. Verify that there is no load in the vehicle (cargo or passengers), except for the driver.
7. The fuel tank should be FULL. Add 2.94 kilograms (6.5 pounds) of weight over the fuel tank for each estimated gallon of missing fuel.
8. Verify correct vehicle suspension height.

LAMP ALIGNMENT SCREEN PREPARATION


The procedure that follows will prepare a suitable front lamp alignment screen.


1. Tape a line on a level floor 7.62 meters (25 feet) away from and parallel to the flat wall that will be used as the lamp alignment screen. The level floor will be used as the horizontal zero reference.
2. An adjacent wall or floor member that is perpendicular to the alignment screen can be used as the vertical zero reference. If there is no adjacent wall or floor member that is perpendicular to the screen, tape a second line on the floor perpendicular to both the alignment screen and the first line, and outboard of either side of where the vehicle will be positioned. This will be used as the vertical zero reference.
3. Position the vehicle so that the side of the vehicle is parallel to the vertical zero reference, and so that the front of the lamp lenses are in the vertical plane of the parallel line taped on the floor 7.62 meters (25 feet) away from the screen.
4. Rock the vehicle side-to-side three times to allow the suspension to stabilize.
5. Jounce the front suspension three times by pushing downward on the front bumper and releasing.
6. Measure the distance between the optical center of one of the lamps being aimed (head or fog) and the floor (horizontal zero reference). Transfer this measurement to the alignment screen with a piece of tape placed horizontally to the floor. This line will be used as the lamp horizontal reference.
7. Measure the distance between the vertical zero reference and the optical center of the nearest lamp being aimed (head or fog). Transfer this measurement to the alignment screen with a piece of tape placed vertically across the appropriate (head or fog) lamp horizontal reference. This is the centerline reference for the first lamp.
8. Measure the distance on center between the first and the second lamp being aimed. Transfer this measurement to the alignment screen with a second piece of tape placed vertically across the appropriate (head or fog) lamp horizontal reference. This is the centerline reference for the second lamp.


HEADLAMP ALIGNMENT
NOTE: Due to the linear nature of the headlamp cutoff, a properly aimed low beam headlamp will project the top edge of the high intensity pattern on the alignment screen from the horizontal line to 50 millimeters (2 inches) below the horizontal line for domestic market vehicles, or to 125 millimeters (5 inches) below the horizontal line for export market vehicles. No horizontal (right/left) adjustment is required for this headlamp beam pattern in domestic market vehicles. Export market vehicles have a second horizontal (right/left) adjustment screw provided. The high beam pattern will be correct when the low beams are properly aimed.


1. Turn the headlamps ON and select the LOW beams for vehicles in all markets.
2. On all vehicles except those with headlamp leveling, use a screwdriver to rotate the headlamp vertical adjustment screw (1) on each headlamp to adjust the beam height as required.
3. For export markets only, use a screwdriver to rotate the headlamp horizontal adjustment screw (2) on each headlamp to adjust the beam right or left as required.
