Default Snatch Blocks.....What's The Deal?

I've not had much experience using snatch blocks on the trail. So, I am kinda shoppin around for one. I have a Warn M8000 on my Jeep. I am assuming that since doubling the winch line doubles the capacity, I will need a snatch block rated at 8 tons. Does this sound right? I am certain I will never pull 8 tons, but it just makes sense .....at least the math does to get one rated for 8 tons max. Am I off base?

dodgepowerwagon.com/glovebox/snatch.html

All you need to know....just remember if you are using Synthetic line, dont use a friends SB that they have used for steel cable.....always use a "synthetic only" snatch block.

And here is something else I just found too...a rigging calculator :

I prefer the type on the top left, just get a warm fuzzy feeling from a beefier item that is pulling so much weight.

I know this is alittle off your question (don't want to see anyone get hurt). But when you start using snatch blocks you are getting into rigging and everything in that system needs to be up to the same specs. What I am saying is if you set up a pull at 16,000# the snatch block, D ring, tow strap, cable, etc. must all be rated for 16,000# or more. Oh and I cant' help it, he said snatch.

RIGHT....and that was actually one of the main parts of my question, so it's not a little off at all. When lookin at snatch blocks they are rated kinda strange. I've seen blocks rated for 8 tons but only say they are for use with a 4000 pound winch. What's up with that? The dead LAST thing I wanna do is get a snatch block that's underrated...so your point is right on the mark. Thanks.

He's right, if you are using it as a stinger your would have to get a strap rated for 16,000 lbs. But, when you use a strap in a basket carry (i.e using it as a tree saver) it doubles the rating of the strap. However, you still need a shackle rated for 16,000 lbs. You're probably talking about something with a 1" pin or so. And NEVER use a bolt in place of a pin. That has gotten people killed off shore.
