I'm in Colorado. The trail guides from Funtreks are the gold standard here. They have a guide for California and San Diego is in Area 6,

Guide to California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails

Good luck!

Corral Canyon off the 8 will be a good place for a shakedown. You can decide how hard of a shakedown you want. Espinoza trail for easy. Sidewinder and Bronco Peak for a more difficult shakedown.

When would you be looking to out and test out the suspension? Coral Canyon probably the best spot in San Diego.

You might be thinking of the pine valley ohv area. To get to corral canyon: I-8 to Buckman springs exit. Head south on Buckman springs road for 3.3 miles to Corral Canyon Rd. Turn right go 5.8 miles to the parking area at 4 corners. Pick which trail you want to go on from there. There is a map in the parking lot.
