Is there some reason everyone is anxious to pay $45 for these vs. just plastidip or painting the chrome?

These are the same specs as an OEM ring, so they'll be the same fit. You may be able to try to add some self adhesive foam to the outside edge of the light to make it a bit tighter fit?

The coating on the OEM rings doesn't hold paint - and after the first rock to hit it or 6-8 months to go by, it begins to flake. This is what happened with the rings on my JK. Plasti dip is nice, but if it starts to peel you have to re-do it. The replacement rings retail at $40/pair, so we're adding in $5 for prep/powder. Pretty good deal in my opinion

Can confirm. I scuffed and painted my stock rings and they have taken a beating. If I were looking for something to stay black, I would definitely pick these up. I don't mind the weathered look though
