Default 2007 vs. 20xx engine difference. Whats up?

Hey all.

just blew my 2007 jk rubi unlimited 3.8 l (connecting Rod) and I'm having a heck of a time. I just want to drop another used engine in, quick swap, nothing fancy. BUT.....Junkyard listings are saying that the 2007 3.8l is different than the 2008 to 2010 3.8l.
Does anybody know what the difference is? Do i have to find an 07 exclusively or am i being thrown off by something really simple? Help would be soooo much appreciated.

Engines are the same from '07-11. The ECU (computers differ). I just installed a '11 3.8 in my '07 with no issues. I left the '07 computer in place.

Read about the swap here. https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/modi...angler-296851/

Default really??

So I can go with anything from a 2007 up to 2011 and everything will just plug right in? I'm nervous as heck about buying a newer year motor and having trouble with the wiring harness or mounts or especially the computer. It would be a real relief to know this is strictly a "plug and play" situation where i dont have to mess with the computer or anything else for that matter. Thanks so much for your input!!

In my experience it was a plug and play install. I installed a 2011 into my 2007. I did Not change the computer, tranny or wiring harness. Engine swap only.

I just finished a 3,000 Mile road trip from WI to Moab with no engine swap issues.

It very well may be; however, He's replacing the entire engine. Not interchanging engine parts between years. To get technical, the exhaust y-pipe is different too but it bolts right up.

The alternator is also lower capacity on the later years. Keep the '07 alternator (probably doesn't come with a junkyard engine anyway).

What are the specific specs on the alternator differences? I have both new ones but left the '11 on my engine. May consider putting the '07 alternator on if it is a big difference.
