Default Who makes the JK six speed?

I'm in the process of pricing out another Jk and wondered who manufacturers the six speed. That is what I currently have in the Rubi but would like to go automatic due to the miles we drive.

Having seen so many Chrysler automatics bite the dust over the past few years I am wondering if the Jeep JK autos are holding up. May be too early to tell. If the six speed it not made by Chrysler, I would like to know who does make it, can't find any info on the net.

It is a Mercedes tranny. Doesn't really mean much, though.

I have overhauled lots of trannys over the years. Biggest problem with all transmissons is the wrong oils used and then not changing often enough. Second item is overheating. On the Jeeps and Chrysler products I always use the oil that they recommend. A few dollars well spent. When I got my JK Rubi, I knew I would be doing some crawling with it. First mod was a tranny oil temp gauge. You can not imagine how quick the oil heats when crawling in low range. It goes hot really quickly. Every engine oil change, check the trans. oil level and smell it. If it is discolered or smells a bit burnt, change oil and filter with recommended fluids. I personally have never had a Chrysler auto, trans. let me down but I change fluids and filters on a regular basis!

Isn't the six speed actually built by Getrag?

Never mind, I found it, the Getrag is in trucks, it's the 238.

So the granddaddy of the auto is that original four speed installed in the late 80's in most of Chrysler's lineup. Hopefully all the bugs have been worked out, that is what I am looking to buy.

The bugs have most definitely NOT been worked out of the auto. Search the forum for auto trans issues, 42RLE, etc. All kinds of TC problems, overheating problems, Chrysler customer service problems, etc. Buy the manual tranny.

Yes, it's a Benz sourced transmission for Chrysler. Here's a tad more info:

That is where I found out it was mercedes as well as some other sites. I then got the gear ratios and other info from Jeep site sources.
