Buying a Stock 2012 Rubicon Unlimited
Hey everyone!
Been a while since I was on here. I sold my old 07 Unlimited Last night and I am looking at purchasing a 2012 Rubicon Unlimited tomorrow locally. After doing quite a bit of research I have concluded that the 12's are a huge risk, especially since the one I am looking at was manufactured in 2011. I have been reading of horror stories regarding the cracked heads. At the moment the jeep has never had any issues and is at 36k miles. From what I understand these jeep have had the warranty extended by jeep for another 100k miles. I hate to bring up something that has been talked about so much before but most all of the threads I could find were last updated in 2012/13 so I am wondering what the current status is of the situation. Is it well known that I absolutely shouldnt buy a 12? Im ready to pull the trigger and the though of having to spend thousands on engine repairs with under 50k miles really bothers me.
Some guidance please!
Thanks!

Just wanted to add that I just spoke with the Jeep dealer and they informed me that the jeep I am looking to purchase has an extended warranty on the left head until 2021 or 114k miles whichever comes first due to the known issue of cracking. He informed me that it only covers the head though. That being said, is it a good buy or should I look elsewhere?
The Jeep is a 4door Rubicon Black Hard Top, Leather, heated seats, navigation, 36k miles, remote start blah blah blah. I am looking to buy it for either 31500 or 32k from a private party in case anyone was interested.
Advice please!

I am mainly concerned with whether or not I should forgo the purchase based on the jeep being an early production 2012 which I hear is prone to problems. I would be very happy to find a 2013 for that price.

I purchased an early 2012 rubicon not long ago. 23k miles, asking 33k. Dual tops, 430n, heated cloth seats, automatic, yada yada.
Anyways i have been happy with it. Just lifted it, put 37s and getting ready to sleeve it. Nothing but fun and satisfaction so far. The cylinder head should be covered under a 10yr 150k mile warranty. Mine is a bit noisy, but no CEL or issues.

I have a 2012 Rubicon that I bought in Oct. 2011. It never had a ticking noise other than a little lifter noise on start up.
I thought I had lucked out, but I got the CEL at 71,000 mi. The dealer confirmed the head problem and promptly replaced it at no cost. I was worried, but it was painless. They did a good job.
It still runs good so I don't give it much thought.

2012 Rubicon here with 59K miles. Manufactured in Nov. 2011. I've had no issues with it. Just a couple of recalls. I think the bad head was associated with heads forged and assembled in Mexico. You might be able to determine where this one was made.
I have no regrets with mine and would buy another 2012. BTW... mine is loaded except for leather and was $37.5K out the door (tax, title, dealer fee, etc.) brand new with a $1K mopar bucks (sticker was $40,150). These things seem to hold their value.

I have a 2012 JKUR also. Had the CEL come on around 31,000 miles, P0302 code (cylinder head 2). Took it to dealership and they were done in 2 days, no muss, no fuss. I think in the early days there were a lot of frustrated people since Jeep first tried to reflash the ECM or something, and then they ran out of parts due to the # of units that went bad. But now it's all sorted out now and at least in my case, the dealer did the work without any issues. Has run great ever since.
If you are happy w/ the price, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to get one.

I have a 12 2dr rubi I bought in sept of 11. I have 40k on it and have had no issues. I would not be too concerned with the one you are looking at. Go for it if you feel the price is right.
