Default How do I identify "bad" engines in oil consuming 07-08 JK jeeps?

This is my first post here:-)

I have been reading this forum and googling a lot. It sounds from what I have read that the improperly built engines were all 07-08. Is this true? My budget will only afford an 07 with some miles and ok condition... MAYBE an 08 if somebody is desperate. 09 and up are just to high.

Is there someway to identify a jeep as likely candidate for future engine failure? I of course can check oil level, but they could of just changed it... especially at a car lot.

I have learned a LOT from all your knowledge on this forum. I have had my lifted/modified xj cherokee for almost 8 years, so I am not new to jeeps, but am new to JK's. Thanks for all your help! :-)

Pull the spark plugs...they will tell you a lot. Change your oil immediately and start an oil comsumption test. Also keep an ear out for spark knock which has been a symptom of the consuming engines

Rumor has it that the bad apples (engines) were built in Mexico that have the major problems. Not all engines were built in Mexico though. Guess it depends on your location in US which increases if you're in the west or southwest. Mine was built in Toledo and so far no problems with the engine, 2010.

How do you know where your jeep is built?

Mine was a USA engine and has problems so the issues can't just be blamed on the Mexico engines.

Never have seen a tag on the block, but there is an engine number stamped on it.
It's located on the back left of the block, just under the head/block parting line.
The second character will be S for Saltillo, or T for Trenton.

Not necessarily but it does seem to be a symptom of the bad motors. Mine is doing both also and started my consumption test last month. My pinging seems worse when it is hot out and more so when the oil is getting low. I am anxious to see how much it has lost next time
