Default Oil change without a mess?

Anyone else frustrated that the oil filter is on the side of the block? I have a valve for the drain plug on the pan but cant seem to pull the filter without making a huge mess. Any ideas to get the filter off without making a huge mess?

I usually just back mine out slowly. The catch pan usually collects the mess. If your really serious about it, relocate the filter. You can buy the filter relo kits.

X2 - If I just break it loose slowly it drains right down into the pan. Just keep loosening until it stops. Drink a cup of coffee/beer while it empties out and you will be good-to-go!

Theres always going to be a bit of a mess when changing the oil filter but try backing it out nice and slow and just let it drain slowly. It may take more time but less mess to clean up

X3.. and, of course do it after draining oil, before new oil. And leave your oil cap off.. discourages suction..
