mine were shot after 3 years when removing the drum the pads just fell apart and 2 were not even there just floating around scrap. its not a easy task. The pad system needs to be assembled with both top and bottom springs on, and then pulled into place. otherwise youl never get those springs on after due to the fact one of the springs is behind parts behind, not allowing good access to the hole it clips into. just a tip

I just replace my pads and drum, planning on replacing the shoes. They looked fine to me. I asked the shop advisor (ASE mechanic), he said you do not have to pull the axle, but it sure makes it real simple. But mine looked fine, so I moved on. Hope that helps.

Just an FYI, if you hear a grinding noise, could very well be a bent axle flange rather than a brake issue. Just my .02
