Default Rear end noise. Please help!

I have a soft sound in the rear end of my 2010 JK. It almost sounds as if a rock were in a tire, but they're clear of rocks. It goes away around 40 MPH and isn't super noticeable at low speeds. Most noticeable around 20-30 MPH I'd say. I have a manual transmission. Any ideas on what it may be?

Are your tires bald, or showing signs of uneven wear?

Done a lift recently? And it's doing it on acceleration, just during braking?

no lift. And it even does it during coasting. I'm not sure about braking. I think it does no matter what

I broke a pinion shaft not too long ago and it sounded like that. Put your jeep on blocks and run it through the gears slowly. pinpoint the sound and go from there. When I took my diff cover off it was pretty easy to see that something had gone wrong. $12 part $57 for overnight shipping and a few hours of work got it back on the trails in no time.

If the rear pinion shaft was broken it seems like the OP wouldn't be able to drive the Jeep.

Mine still drove. Depends on where he broke it and if it fell out or not. By no means am I saying that he has a broken pinion shaft for sure. I'm just saying my jeep was making sounds that seem to be very similar to what he is experiencing. We all know that these "sounds like" threads are impossible to pinpoint.
