Default A better antenna mount

I went and purchased a new antenna mount today
Comet Antenna RS-720 NMO-Type Hatch-trunk-Lip mount
I mounted it on the front of the hood passenger side. You could just as easy mount it on the side of the hood.

Seems a bit odd having an antenna up front like that, but whatever works for ya. Looks like a pretty solid mount. Does it seem to do better up front?

Does it interfere with opening your hood?

This antenna is for a dual band ham radio. The hood acts as a ground plane. = better antenna performance. I'm not a expert but it's what i have been told. The mount is very stout and much better then my last mount.

Congrats on the new ticket

It does seem a little odd having the antenna up front like that. Looks like that bracket articulates on 2 planes? Why not move it to the hinge side of the hood? I'm planning to install a similar bracket but mine is going between the hinges on the passanger side of the tailgate. Planning to use the diamond SG2000 and its a long antenna (62.5 inches). No way I could mount it up front without hitting branches

BTW, Its will not be just the hood giving you the ground plane but the entire vehicle. In your installation, the maximum radiation pattern will be behind you. If the antenna is mounted on the rear the max. pattern is in front of you.

The hood does indeed act as a groundplane. You would probably get a bit better performance out of it mounting it on the hinge side of the hood, as you would have more metal front to back. But if its working well for you, so much the better.

I personally am running a glass mount 2M/440 mount in the top corner of the passenger side of the windshield and am getting great reports.

Congrats to all who have recently gotten their tickets, and welcome to the hobby, there's a lot of really helpfull people out there on the ham bands.

To all who are getting ready to take the test, best of luck to you all. The test is really pretty easy, including the upgrade to General.

If any of you have any technical questions, I'd be happy to do what I can to answer them.
