So I got a wild hair up my ass after re-subscribing to sirius that I needed a bit more bass than the factory stereo was providing. I did not want to give up much room in the cargo area as I have a 2dr. Since I did not want to blow my ears off I just decided to go with a real nice 8" sub. I chose a kicker 8" L7 woofer and a kicker 400w rms amp to push it. This pictorial is more about the sub install as the amp install was just your standard install under the passenger seat. The factory specs recommend between .33 to .75 CuFt. of air space for this sub. Since space was at a premium and so is air space for the sub I went right in the middle with .55 CuFt. of air space inside the box. I built the box out of 3/4" mdf, braced all corners, and built it to fit the contour of the rear seat to maximize air space. After I had it built I had to figure out how I was going to mount it. After looking at the factory sub mount points and trying to figure out something with those I quickly realized that they were not going to work, mainly because they were too flimsy. I knew I wanted it hard mounted and not just flopping around so I decided to order some standoff's and I figured out that I could 3 point mount it with 2 bolts on the bottom and one in the side. All were a breeze to get to and we are lucky that all you have to do is drop the passenger taillight out and you have full access to that cavity so mounting that bolt was also very easy. It Just took some careful measuring to make sure everything was lined up perfectly and noting was in a bind. I will say that this thing is solid after it was all tightened down. I was skeptical at first if it would be with only 3 bolts but let me assure you it aint going anywhere. After getting the mounting figured out I took it back out and filled the holes with body filler, sanded them down, and took it over to the Line-X shop to have it coated. I think it turned out great and it fits the look of the jeep and will not scratch or ding up easily. It should stay looking great for many years. I got it all wired up and installed and it sounds great. With conservative settings it is easily about 3-4 times the amount of bass compared to the factory sub. All I have left to do is trim the cover for the compartment as it is a bit wider than the factory sub box.

You can kind of get an idea from the last picture that about 5" or so sticks out the top of the tailgate with the top off. I think since is has the black spray lining on it that it will hardly be noticeable. Besides the wheel and tire I have on the spare cover some of it.

No, its a sealed enclosure. That hole on the backside is for the terminal. I thought about adding some poly but wanted to see how it did without it first.

Installed under the passenger seat, ran the wires back to the sub the same way the factory wires were. Now that it is broken in a bit the sound has really picked up nicely on this. Way more bass than I was expecting.
