Default Installing 10" Sub in storage compartment

I've been meaning to install a sub in my JK but didn't want to go with the factory option. I don't want it to be visible at all and catch attention. So I started to think, what would be possibe to do w/out the sub or the amp being visible? Well, after researching for a few days, I have come accross this sub.
It's 10". I didn't want to go w/ 8" which is why it made it so hard to find a sub that would fit. The space of the storage is about 11" by 18" and dept is a little more than 4.75 inch. That is what we all have to work with.

Here are pictures of it and the specs:

» 10" 4-ohm shallow subwoofer
» five-sided polypropylene cone with rubber surround
» shallow-design basket
» power range: 80-330 watts RMS (1,200 watts peak power)
» frequency response: 18-2,500 Hz
» sensitivity: 88 dB
» top-mount depth: 2-7/8" (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT)
» sealed box volume: 0.57 cubic feet
» ported box volume: 0.43 cubic feet
» Recommended Q-Logic Box Type: 1
» warranty: 1 year

I don't know how to work much w/ fiberglass yet so I wanted to get started w/ MDF. It would make it a lot easier for me and quick.
Here are some pictures of the process. It's not quiet finished yet but I am waiting for my headunit to show up this week so by next weekend, I shall have all of it done.

1. Storage area: If you're using MDF then you have very about 11" by 18" and almost 5" of dept. But w/ fiber glass, it will get about 24" wide.

2. I made the box and it's not finished yet so I will not take many pics of it. But this is how it will sit in the storage compartment once done.

3. Shot of the sub being in the storage compartment while putting the cover back down.

4. The cover is completely closed now.

5. If you have power lock, this is important. When you close the cover, it's very hard to take the top apart because the end goes right under the rear door when you close it. Here's a pic to explain.

I will have more pictures posted once I furnish the box a little more and then paint it. This is a great option for anyone looking to install a 10" sub and have it hidden or space is important to you. Please advice of any inputs you might have on this. It will be help to me and to all of us at the JK forum.

***UPDATE - 5/6/07***

I finally finished my project. Though, I still have to pain the box. But here are the rest of the pictures....

6. So I had to cut the cover so the sound passes through. With it on, the sound probably wouldn't be as clear and/or as loud.....

7. Here are some more pictures of it after it's cut. As you can see, the pastic is pretty thick. But it was very very easy to cut. It's not solid so cutting took about 5 mins tops.

8. I decided to go to Walmart and get matching fabric, a pastic "grill" or net, and spray fabric glue. Costed ($10)

9. I had to cut the pastic net into shape because it was too big.

10. Sprayed some glue on the OEM cover and put the pastic piece on top and sprayed the glue again so I am ready to cover it with the fabric.

11. After covering it with the fabric....I turned it over and folded the fabric in the back and glued it on so the edges look nice. Then it was time let it dry.

12. Here are the final pictures of the install after it is done.

As you can see, looks just fine. You wouldn't even know that there is a 10" sub this JK. Of course, the amps are hidden as well. I don't want to draw too much attention in my neighborhood when I leave my top off over the night.

I dont want to rain on your day, but have you listened to it yet?
If not, you may want to do that before you go and finish it all up.
Its a good idea and all, but I dont think its going to sound very good.
Did you figure out the air space in the box?
I see that the sub asks for .57 cubic ft and that doesnt include the sub itself. Just by looking at it, that box doesnt look like its big enough.
Then there is the problem with it firing right into a hard plastic lid covered in carpet, that appears to be sitting on the sub due to it buldging up in the last pic.
If that is the case, the sub will be slapping into the lid and it moves in and out.
The sound will also have a hard time getting through it.

What I would do, is find some way to make a new lid or cut a hole in the stock one, use some kind of metal mesh over the sub and cover it in carpet....all while making sure it doesnt touch the surface of the sub, then it may not sound half bad

You're right on the point my brother! Like I said. I am not done w/ this yet. But yes, there will be a 10" hole in the cover but I'm still working that right now. I have about .67 cubic ft in there at the moment. We'll see what hapens.....If I need, I will port it which will only need .43 cubic ft.

I'll keep you guys posted and I will know how it sounds by sometime next weekend. Oh and about the sub slapping into the hard plastic, it won't do that because when it fires, it doesn't go passed the plastic thats surrounding it. Or else they wouldn't reccoment bottom mount.

What made you go with the Sony instead of the Pioneer shallow sub? I dropped my jk off this morning to get the box made.

I like the idea, but I like the use of the lockable storage much better since the jeep is short of permanent storage. I am gonna replace the HU of my non-amplified stock setup. I just bought an SW826 sub for under the front seat. The guy at the stereo shop said it would be enough to fill the cab nicely. Maybe he just wanted the sale, I dunno, but I like it cause it's cast aluminum. I will let you know what it sounds like after I install it. They are imported and sold under different brands. Just google "SW826" to take a look.

I didnt know of the Pioneer until just today from your old post. Lets see how the Sony is. I think it'll be a good sub. Also, how are they making your box?? What are they making out of?

It's fine if you have 2 door and you don't take off the doors and top but for a 4 door, w/out the door and top, you won't really hear it much...

He is making a fiberglass mold and using MDF on the top. I went and looked at the progress a little while ago and it is looking good. He mounted the amp under the drivers seat and was working on the top plate of the box when I left while the fiberglass was drying.

I have never been a fan of Sony car audio but they do make great TVs. I have always preferred Pioneer, I am curious to see how your box comes out. Mine should be done tomorrow.
